Background of the study
TikTok lip sync videos have emerged as influential vehicles for phonetic variation in Nigerian digital communication. These videos, which involve mimicking audio clips, encourage users to experiment with pronunciation, intonation, and stress patterns to create engaging content. Nigerian TikTok users often modify standard phonetic features, resulting in novel accents and vocal styles that diverge from traditional norms (Akinyemi, 2023). The platform’s emphasis on visual and auditory performance stimulates a dynamic interplay between speech production and digital expression. Comparative analysis of TikTok lip sync videos reveals that these phonetic modifications are influenced by factors such as cultural identity, peer imitation, and the desire to achieve viral appeal (Ibrahim, 2024). Statement of the problem
